About Master Millennials
A lost generation…
If you asked a baby boomer, that’s exactly how they might describe millennials, also known as Gen Y, for young adults born from 1981 to 1996. But as older millennials just making the cut (born in 1981), we think the story is just starting on millennials and that over the next decade, we stand to make the greatest impact towards the progress of mankind than perhaps any other generation has ever made.
That all sounds a little bold and overly optimistic right? Millennials, the greatest generation ever? I can hear baby boomers rolling over now in their future graves.
Well despite the theme we all hear that millennials are nothing more than lazy, broke, social media junkies still living with their parents (how original), the real truth is that millennials are quietly becoming the most productive generation of all time. And as the first fully connected generation to come of age, we’re turning the economy upside down.
Sure, a large crop of millennials might scoff at the idea of slaving away in a cubicle or on an assembly line. Starting our careers amidst the great recession made us a little bitter to this idea as we watched our parents generation lose their retirement savings and in many cases, their jobs. But the world is changing, and those types of jobs just aren’t going to be around for the long haul. And millennials know this.
Think about this…Facebook, Instagram, Airbnb, Lyft, Coinbase, Robinhood, Pinterest, Duolingo, Stripe - all founded by millennials. And with so many other millennials just beginning their careers, we’re confident we are just getting started disrupting society - whether that be through starting the next great company or finally solving the world’s problems that so many other generations are content to just kick down the road.
We can certainly all dream of being the next founder of a billion dollar start-up, eliminating world hunger or bringing clean water to all communities around the globe. But it’s also important to realize that while we can dream big and work hard, we may not have all the answers today. We have much to learn from each other if we’re going to develop as individuals in both our careers and personal lives.
Sure, money is great, but there is more to a happy, fulfilling life than career accomplishments. Our relationships, health and hobbies are just as important and deserve equal attention.
This brings us full circle to why this site exists. As elders of the millennial generation, we would love nothing more than for those of us still navigating the start of their lives to not make the same mistakes that we did. But beyond that, the idea of becoming a “master” at anything in life is something all of us should aspire towards, even though mastery is often unobtainable. And for the writers of this blog, becoming a master millennial is a journey that has no end.
While it’s ultimately up to you the reader to decide if our life advice holds any credence, we know that millennials as a whole deserve better than the generational hand we’ve all been dealt and that with the right tools, we can be so much more.
So whatever brought you to this blog, we hope you’ll stop and take a look around. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something along the way? Or if you’d like to contribute to the community by leaving your comments, we welcome you - the more the merrier (no matter what generation you might claim).
